The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel
You are looking at The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel
John Wesley
On Sunday 11 th June 1780 John Wesley came to preach in Kirton and this was the beginning of regular Methodist preaching in our town. You are walking down Wesley Street (formerly North Street and Adelaide Road) which was named in recognition of this in 1901 when street names were consolidated and formalised.
The Chapel
This Wesleyan chapel was built in 1840 to replace a building which was too small for a growing congregation. Extensions and improvements were made in 1875 and a hall added in 1928.
These pictures date from the early 1900s before the hall was added.
The interior has a gallery and a fine organ and is a Listed Building.
In the 1990s the churches came together to form a Local Ecumenical Partnership (LEP) and the Wesleyan Chapel was considered surplus to requirements. It is now a private residence.
Continue down Wesley Street, turn right into March Street then left into St Andrew’s Street
