The Church Halls

You are looking at the former Baptist Church for Kirton in Lindsey.

The Origins

The origins of the Baptist Church in Kirton date from the mid-1600s with the formal foundation registered as 1663. This date is carved onto the stone plaque on the wall, but it is not when the building was erected. This is believed to be around 1815. Prior to this, worship would have been in private houses.

The building was altered several times; in 1847 to make it bigger and again in 1897 when the present front was added to the building.

This picture shows the chapel before the 1897 additions.

The Movement of Services

Until the late 1990s, there were three places of worship in Kirton – the Anglican church, the Wesleyan Methodist chapel and the Baptist chapel.

All three were struggling with congregation size so made the brave decision to move all services to St. Andrew’s Church. The Baptist Church took on the role of the Church Hall and the Wesleyan Methodist Church was sold and is now a private house.

This picture shows the 1897 frontage and extension.

Next door is also a building of importance – The Old infant’s school.
