Sweeps Lane

A lot of the older parts of Kirton have changed very little over the years, but here is an example of a major change! As you look from West Cross Street at what is now Dunston Villas, this was the view in the late 18th/ early 19th century.

The Lane

It used to be called Sweeps Lane and was on the edge of the town. All that remains today is the stone cottage on the right.

Why it was called Sweeps Lane remains a mystery. Was it where the chimney sweep lived, or could it have been someone’s name? We shall probably never know.
